RARE: 1953 Deltaville Round-Stern Deadrise Oyster Boat

For sale is a recently refurbished 1953 Deltaville, Virginia Chesapeake Deadrise.

* 38 foot length
* 9 foot 9 inch Beam
* Draws 18 inches

Built primarily by luminary Deltaville Boat Builders Lewis Wright (along with his acclaimed uncle John Wright), this is one of the few true and documented "Jackson Creek Round Stern" vessels that survived the oyster fishery demise of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Here is an article for background on this unique type of Chesapeake Deadrise vessel:

The boat was surveyed in 2020 by renowned wooden-hull estimator/craftsman James R. (Randy) Renn, SAMS | AMS certified — prior to an 18 month restoration during COVID (2019-21). Estimated value before renovation was .

Powered by a stout Volvo Penta AQAD40B in-line 6 cylinder TurboDiesel motor (~165hp), this deadrise cruises easily in the mid-teens but sips fuel when tempered to under nots.

Current owner restored the vessel for dual purpose: 1) active work as an oyster boat in the South River and 2) a Gentleman’s Cruiser with room for a tailgate/happy hour of more than 10 adults.

The aft cabin wall is trimmed in Western Red Cedar and ALL interior gunnel sheathing strips and deck flooring are 100% exotic Mahogany (true old-growth Swietenia Macrophylla hard-wood … not new-growth modern Mahogany) that was originally sourced/installed in the 1960s and holds up as expected with a great patina. This exotic hard, straight-grain finishing wood CANNOT be sourced in this amount currently for less than K if at all. Owner has been offered for this material alone but will not sell it separately from the vessel so do not bother asking!

The boat is USCG Documented as a Commercial Fisheries Vessel with provenance documented of previous owners (5). Worked hard for 50+ years, the boat then spent 12 years in fresh water on Smith Mountain Lake (VA) as a tour boat used by owners of a restaurant for sunset cruises during which time a substantial restoration was done and carefully maintained.

Current owner extended this initial work with "on the hard" restorations of the rudder plate (Atlantic White Cypress), prop, and ablative bottom paint and waterlines. Electrical upgrades included proper gauge wiring, three new batteries (1 as back-up), 3-bank industrial marine charger/maintainer, new starter motor, new float and manual bilge pumps (2) with 3-way switches. New 28 foot Teleflex shifting/throttle cabling installed along with custom dual Morse Control.

Aluminum beam runs the length of the vessel. When utilized in tandem with tie-down loops and cabin canopy snaps, the working / seating area behind the cabin can be completely shaded with a 9×12 canopy or tarp.

Being a round-stern there is ample area for oyster/crabbing gear or touring amenities (kayaks, dinghy, bikes, coolers, etc.). Current owner uses for both purposes depending on the season and has full-size oyster aquaculture cages on site to show how easily they are accommodated.

Serious Inquiries Only Please …

Given the historical significance of this particular boat (and the Chesapeake Deadrise in general) the owner will only entertain sale to a new owner either planning to use it to work the water, educate kids about the history of Chesapeake Watermen, or join the ranks of owners who have clocked-in to preserve its character in attempt to help it survive to its 100th Anniversary (only 30 more years — Why Not?!).
