Comanche class, Sparkman & Stephens design built in 1970 by Chris Craft. Built when fiberglass was invented and engineers did not understand its structural properties, the hull is extremely thick. Last surveyed in 2015 and cleared by my marine insurance to leave the dock in 2016. However, IMO, this is still a project boat. It is currently slipped at Fortman Marina in Alameda, California. A summary of primary systems is below.

Engine: For maintenance, I have the engine number and record of all the time I started and ran it. As near as I can tell, the 40hp Perkins 4-107 was not OEM. I think this is the case because it is challenging to access different parts of it through hatches in the original cabin sole, the exhaust manifold rises above the cabin floor about 5", and the primary raw-water cooled exhaust system was made out of black iron pipe. After researching and observing what a safe and effective primary/secondary raw-water cooled system should look like, I purchased two Vetus GRP Waterlocks. However, as this system requires one more component, that project was not finished. That one component is a stainless steel exhaust manifold coupling. Unless you are a master TIG welder, you will need to hire someone to design and construct this for you. It must be designed to accept raw water but not allow this water to back flow into the engine. To make it easier to bleed the fuel lines downstream of the mechanical injection pump, you will also need to consider installing a starter motor button in the engine bay.

Fuel system: I installed a new Racor 500FG2 turbine fuel filter/water separator in 2015. During installation, I discovered the main Monel fuel tank was warped and the inspection cover was not sealing. This is likely because whoever installed the 4-107 did not put a pressure relief valve on the tank. Though the inspection cover is now sealed with RTV silicone (a band aid), you will want to consider replacing the tank.

New oil filtration system: The original oil filter reservoir was replaced with a remote oil filter base (that accepts the screw on canister type filters).

Battery Array: Originally comprised of dead starter batteries, I installed two pair of 6-volt, deep-cycling GC2, and wired up each in series. Out of necessity, also replaced the 1970’s battery charger with a modern 3-stage charger with adaptive loading. Secured with a weather resistant GFCI outlet. All 120V outlets were replaced with GFCI (per survey).

Cockpit: If you are dreaming of using this boat for bluewater cruising, you will need to dramatically increase the size of the cockpit drains (and plumb them to thru-hulls on the opposite side). Cockpit coamings/helm station are made of mahogany and been sanded/varnished so much that they are at risk of failure. Consider replacing with Coosa Composite. Consider replacing hand rails with stainless. As the previous owner cracked the steering quadrant. I have overhauled the helm system by replacing it with a beefier, re-designed quadrant, wheel sprocket, 6′ stainless chain, and cable. Soaked the chain assembly in T-9 Boeshield.

Anchor Locker: As this boat was originally designed to race (not cruise), it appears one of the previous owners mounted what looks like a SeaTiger 555 manual windlass to the deck and also installed chain deck pipes. The pipes lead down to a forward cavity in the bow. Since the marine ply in this "chain locker" is neither sealed, painted, nor reinforced (and one open panel faces the V-berth), I do not think this project was ever finished. In addition to re-designing this cavity, an outboard drain at the bottom of this locker would be required.
