Step One: Ask questions about a boat, request shipping quote to your country (make sure first a boat and shipping cost fit into your budget).
Step Two: Order a Full Survey. *You can buy As-Is, but we always recommend a Full Survey for buyers protection.
Step Three: Once a Full Survey comes back satisfactory (normally within 3-5 days), you want to proceed with a boat purchase and your offer is accepted, we will e-mail you an invoice to pay for a boat and shipping with wire transfer instructions. We start a boat export process once your wire has been received.
Selling my 1973 26ft JJ Taylor (Contessa) sailboat. I’ve taken it across Florida this past year without any issues – sailing, motoring, and motorsailing. The previous owner had taken it from Maryland to Florida in 2021.
What the boat has:
– solid hull with no soft spots or leaks. There were minor leaks on the starboard side around the shroud beddings that I’ve sealed with silicone, but they will need a more permanent fix, especially if you do any real sailing.
– new 4hp Mercury outboard motor purchased in November 2021. No issues with this either. I’ve taken it around Florida with this motor. However, I would get a bigger outboard (6 or even 9hp) or look into an inboard.
– main sail that the previous owner had custom made for the boat
– hang on jib that is in good condition but not the optimal headsail for this boat
– storm jib in bag
– 22lb CQR anchor that has held really well, has 40ft of chain, 110ft of chain+rode
– composting toilet with some spare composting material. It works well.
– marine two burner alcohol stove. Very simple.
– basics you need to get on the water, anchored, or docked in a slip: life vests, flotation, radio, battery operated removable nav lights, external fuel tanks, plenty of spare lines, fenders, flares, bosun’s chair, winches, shore power cord.
– previous owner had the standing rigging inspected but I would do so again if you want to do serious voyaging.
What the boat needs/would be nice to have:
– to be taken out and washed/scraped/painted. There’s a DIY yard next door that should have space open up after hurricane season, as one option.
– electrical hookups. I’ve been running on battery powered everything. There’s a solar panel you could hook up and aluminum rigging off the stern where the outboard sits that you can mount them to if you keep that rigging as is.
– new compass. old one is broken.
– any navigation equipment that’s not handheld
– anchor windlass.
In short, the boat itself is solid and has proven itself but needs to be outfitted with more creature comforts. I’ve seen it in some rough weather up the ICW and it handles really well! I got it in October 2021 and am selling it to trade for an apartment and don’t want to pay for that + a slip, and I won’t be able to move it much in the near future. Currently it’s sitting in a slip on the space coast. I’m selling it for what I paid for it. It’s a great voyager/racer that would be good for one very able bodied and adventurous person who’s dedicated.
