Storm Rider Aphrodite 101 for sale

The Jan Kjaerulff and Paul Elvström day sailor/racer combo. Designed and build in Denmark, the orginal molds have been purchased by Ott Yachts in Germany and are still built to this day (only k fresh off the production line). Nearly 500 boats have been built to date, with over 140 sailing on Lake Constance. In the early 80’s a number were brought over from Europe mostly to the Seattle and Boston area. Downwind this boat acts like it was built in Santa Cruz and upwind it will outperform most boats.

I am selling my pride and joy because life is changing, and I’m looking for a bigger/different boat. This boat was purchased from the Richmond Yacht Club, someone named Don McRea had donated it and the original funds went towards the youth sailing program up there.

How do you price a boat when there’s only 5 on the Bay and they never come up for sale? I think this is a reasonable price considering it’s turn key and a competitive racer. In the mix on Wednesday/Friday night estuary racing and holding its own for the plastic classic the other week.

This boat is 32’6” long with a beam of 8’. Single spreader Ballenger fractional rig. Lots of sail area! Many people mistake it for an Olson but the lines are a little sexier in my opinion.
– Inboard YSB8, one cylinder beast
– Current sail inventory leaves a little to be desired
– North Main (Still crispy)
– Backup North Main (Less crispy)
– Doyle Laminate 80% (last leg)
– North Sails 100% (50% life)
– Quantum 124% (decent shape)
– 1/4oz spinnaker (pin pricks here and there 40% life)
– 1/2oz spinnaker (old but functional).
– Rod rigging has been inspected and tuned, probably installed 2010 – 2015ish but in good shape
– Bottom hasn’t been painted in probably 5 years but she’s had monthly hull cleanings
– New toilet (only been peed in a handful of times….).

When I purchased the boat, the hardware, running rigging, deck and many other aspects were in ill repair. Throughout the last few years I have done some extensive work getting her up to racing shape.

Everything on the deck has been removed, decking stripped, holes filled, fiberglass repaired and new decking has been installed. The deck has been sanded, re-primed, multiple coats of two part interlux paint. Lewmar tread master decking was installed, the same that was on the original package in 1978. Lasted 40+ years and was still grippy so why change it. The decking has been laid with the lewmar specific tread master 2 part epoxy so the deck is properly sealed. All hardware on the deck has been installed with butyl tape because flexibility in redesigning the layout and 4000/treadmaster combo would look messy.

All hardware has been replaced or serviced. New clutches, deck organizers, cam cleats. Blocks have been replaced here and there. Winches are the original with exception of the tertiary port which was replaced with used to match the aesthetic.

Running rigging has been all replaced, dyneema here and there but mostly poly since sails are going to make more of a difference than the lines.

Electronics…. There are none with exception of a Velocitek Speedpuck which when holding a charge is great otherwise you feel the boat. Original electronics seemed to be engineered alongside the original digital alarm clock radio, Blue Pelican wouldn’t even take them. Capacity for installing new gauges is there and through hulls are ready for new instrumentation if that’s what you want to do.

Stanchions have been modified, carbon fiber with dyneema that is not ocean approved (only 12” tall). Original stanchions are down below and can be reinstalled. Original life lines were non serviceable so reinstalling 24” stanchions would mean new dyneema or stainless wire.

The interior is something I have worked on here and there but I realized earlier this year that I would be selling her and I wanted the new owner(s) to put their own touch down below. Paint white or varnish the old wood? I was in-between and I thought whoever gets her next would have some ideas that might not line up with mine.

Things that I would do with more budget and time:
– New 100% jib and symmetrical
– Bottom paint
– Replace mixing elbow with stainless steel
