This 1978 Catalina 30 Tall Rig is an outstanding example of one of the most successful production boats in sailboat history. Catalina Yachts produced over 6,300 of this model alone, more than many of its competitor’s entire combined line of sailboats.

Cannoli Mia features a highly upgraded interior with tens of thousands of dollars worth of custom teak and canvas hand crafted by Bellafiore and Sons, LTD Edition. With her six-plus feet of standing headroom and nearly 11’ beam, she has the most spacious interior of any other sailboat in her class. Her L-shaped settee to port and straight settee on starboard are covered in a tufted teal velour that matches both her three-piece v-berth (complete with custom v-berth sheets and a v-shaped comforter), and her aft full berth. The large hatch above the v-berth provides great airflow and light when opened on a typical lovely San Diego day.

The nicely laid-out U-shaped galley to port, whose traditional faux butcher block formica has been replaced with a nice neutral gray, has double sinks with hot and cold pressure water (fed by dock pressure), and a foot pump for water when away from the dock (the latter delivered via the two water tanks onboard – an upgrade from the single factory installed water tank.) This boat also has a fairly new Princess propane 3-burner stove and oven, a custom built storage shelf and spice drawer, and a convenient third drawer added to Catalina Yachts’ typical 2-drawer bank that came standard on C-30s of this vintage.

A Vitrifrigo Marine Refrigeration unit has been added to the icebox which, with its teak bi-fold lid and insulated bottom, is situated in the aft port quarter. Various other custom teak accessories adorn the galley. There’s plenty of light in this galley with the addition of three LED down lights integrated into a clever L-shaped teak fixture designed to hide the deck hardware protruding into the underside of the cabin top. Those traditional plexiglass panels in the galley have been replaced with real teak sliding doors which have a matching tambour-like design, featured on other custom lighting panels and the like found throughout the yacht. This gives a true yachtly elegance to the boat tying in the overall design scheme.

To starboard across from the galley is a standing navigation station with a lift-top desktop that has lots of storage below, and even more storage in the body of the nav station itself. Again, an ingenious Bellafiore invention above provides both light via an LED downlight but also a hidden compartment for maps and valuables while again obscuring the nuts and washers from the cabin top hardware.

Moving forward is the spacious salon. This model has a L-shaped settee to port with a custom-made table that can function as a six-person dining table, a queen bunk (using the matching velour one-piece foam insert – no more filling in with varying sized foam inserts), or in the bulkhead-mounted position, which really opens up the area. To starboard is a straight settee providing a bunk long enough for a six-foot tall crew person to stretch out and snooze. Above this starboard settee is a mounted Naxa 24” AC/DC HDTV with an Amazon Stick and a cabling to a masthead TV antenna.

Another amazing feature is the tambour (aka roll-top desk-like) mini bar built-in above the most forward section of the starboard settee. The chainplates on the bulkheads have been upgraded with extra backing stainless steel plates and oversized washers and bolts. The rigging itself is less than 10 years old.

A bureau with a bank of four drawers and a two-door hanging locker is forward to starboard, across from which is the fully enclosed head with a bi-fold teak door. The head has a (dock) pressure shower and custom shower sump in the bilge, and its Jabsco manual toilette has been serviced in the past year which included a new pump assembly and new odor-free discharge hose. The opening Bomar hatch above the head and added Lewmar opening portlight provide great ventilation, especially when combined with the matching opening portlight above the teak hanging locker/bureau directly across from it. The countertop in the head matches the galley’s as does the tambour styling of the sliding cabinet doors. All of the wood inside this boat is in exceptional shape.

The huge v-berth has also been updated. For example, the standard pin rails usually found throughout C-30s have all been replaced with solid teak rails, and the exposed white fiberglass inner hull liner has a lightly varnished bead board from the aft quarter berth to the v-berth and along the main companionway bulkhead. At its widest point, the v-berth is nearly that of a kingsized bed.

The exterior gel coat is in great shape and still shines thanks to the routine professional waxing and washdowns. While Catalina produced a number of these boats with a light tan hull, a matching color on deck was uncommon. This gives the yacht a very stately look and feel and her teak handrails are in very good shape: the previous owner replaced the handholds and hatch boards, using West System epoxy and varnish, most of which has been covered since. There is some minor wear and abrasion to the companionway trim hatch board slots. A teak bi-fold entry door is included which not only makes egress in and out the boat much easier than using the hatch boards, but also provided light into the boat while keeping any unpleasant weather out.

Halyards were run internally within the mast, a concept that was not introduced until later C-30 models. A Garhauer rigid boom vang was added as was Garhaeur hardware on the traveler. The upgraded oversized Lewmar two speed self tailing winches makes trimming the Harken roller-furled 150 Genoa a breeze. The headsail has the added foam luff to allow for reefing to a very usable reduced sail plan on this spirited tall rig design. All of the stainless stations, pulpits, etc. items have been replaced and there are numerous other exterior refinements that makes sailing this very unique Catalina 30 a joy.

The tiller was built by hand and finished off with fancy knot work which makes it both functional to hold and dignified to look at. A canvas cover (replaced recently) for the tiller has kept the varnish in great shape and the included is an Raymarine AutoHelm Tiller Pilot makes single handing a breeze.

Mounted port and starboard are Plastimo compasses (w/covers) and on the port bulkhead is a Garmin GPSmap 441s color chartplotter. Aloft on the masthead is a Shakespeare Marine TV antenna.

The nearly-full canvas for the cabin top, winch covers, handmade custom teak-and-holly cockpit dining table for cocktails or wine after a nice day of sailing, Kuuma BBQ, and bow sprit covers keeps these areas of the boat clean and protects the teak and stainless steel while her large canvas awning provides shade at port. All of this canvas, including the mainsail cover were new in 2019.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind Catalina 30 who’s owner has purchased a motor yacht and is motivated to find her a new home with owners who will care for her as much as he has.

Come see for yourself why this wonderfully restored yacht turns heads at every marina she’s visited. Listed exclusively with AGL Yacht Sales in San Diego, contact Leilani Wales to set up a viewing today.
