The Whitehall was developed in the 1820’s as a water taxi and ship chandler’s boat for the New York harbor. So appealing was the Whitehall boats that they have plied the waters since then. They were favored by merchants in both the East and West coast harbors: Boston, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and others. They were used for ferrying cargo, people and wares to and from the offshore shipping fleets. These hardy boats have proven their speed, agility and seaworthiness as yacht tenders, dinghies and day sailors for two centuries. They have long ago earned the title “classic” boats.
16 Foot hand crafted “Whitehall” built by Shew & Burnham in South Bristol Maine in 1983, a design from “The American Small Sailing Craft” by H.I. Chapelle. The sheer strake is a one piece molded design used for many years by the Herreshoff Mfg. Co.
