A Yacht That Became Home at Sea
Some boats are bought for weekends. Others are chosen for a season.
This Bavaria 44 was chosen for a life.
Purchased in Greece by a Canadian family of five, she became the foundation for a three-year journey that quietly stretched into something far greater than planned. What began as a sailing decision turned into a full-time way of life, crossing oceans, visiting 34 countries by sea, and becoming a floating home for two parents and three teenagers growing up underway.
She is now offered for sale as this chapter comes to a close, following a family decision to return to Canada as their eldest son, now 19 prepares for his next stage of life.
The Journey
From the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and up to Florida, this Bavaria 44 cruiser has lived what many yachts are only built to imagine.
She has crossed open ocean passages, anchored in remote bays, and stood her ground in some of the most demanding conditions cruising sailors face:
* Lightning storms surrounding the vessel at sea, without incident
* Confused 15-foot seas where she remained composed and predictable
* A waterspout encounter with no damage sustained
* Extended anchoring in winds exceeding 80 knots, holding steady throughout
Through it all, she consistently delivered what mattered most: confidence offshore and safety for the people aboard.
A True Family Liveaboard
This is a fully lived-in, full-time cruising yacht, not a lightly used weekend vessel.
For the past three years she has been the home of a family of five, supporting daily life, schooling, passage-making, and everything in between. She has proven herself not just as a passage maker, but as a reliable, livable space at sea.
The family documented their journey through their sailing channel, capturing life aboard across continents and conditions.
Why This Boat
Among many yachts viewed during the original search, this Bavaria stood out for something intangible, a sense of safety, balance, and rightness underway.
Over years of continuous use and offshore cruising, that initial impression proved accurate. Compared to other vessels encountered along the way, she required fewer repairs and delivered consistent mechanical and structural reliability.
The only recurring maintenance item has been routine servicing such as impeller replacement, minor in the context of full-time offshore use.
Bavaria 44 – Proven Bluewater Platform
The Bavaria 44 from the respected J&J Design era is known for combining volume, strength, and manageable short-handed sailing. This vessel represents that philosophy in real-world offshore conditions.
She offers:
* 4-cabin, 2-head owner’s layout
* Volvo Penta D2-55hp diesel engine
* In-mast furling mainsail and furling genoa
* Inner forestay with factory structural reinforcement
* Twin helm cockpit with walk-through transom
* Substantial interior volume ideal for family cruising
Highlights & Equipment
* 600W solar array for off-grid cruising (new in 2024)
* Raymarine navigation suite with autopilot
* Hard-case offshore liferaft
* Windlass with 60m chain + primary and secondary anchors
* Full cockpit enclosure (bimini & sprayhood)
* Achilles tender with 9.9hp Mercury outboard (electric start)
* Well-equipped galley with updated stove/oven (2023)
* New salon and cockpit cushions (2025)
* Continuous liveaboard provisioning and systems maintenance
Condition & Care
This yacht has been maintained as a liveaboard cruising home, with continuous use and attention to operational readiness rather than seasonal storage.
Systems have been kept functional and upgraded where needed to support offshore living and family safety.
She is presented as a turnkey cruising vessel with proven offshore history.
The Global Advantage
This vessel offers a rare legal and financial setup for international buyers:
* EU VAT Paid
* Polish Flagged: Currently registered under the Polish flag, the most popular registry for international cruisers. It is a "lifetime" registration (no renewals), has no restrictive equipment requirements, and is easily transferable to new owners of any nationality.
A Closing Chapter
After three years and 34 countries by sea, the family is transitioning back to Canada to support their son’s next steps.
The boat that carried them safely through storms, distance, and change is now ready for her next owners.
