The MerCruiser 8.1S Horizon engines are known for being freshwater cooled (closed cooling system). In this system, coolant circulates through the engine block and heat exchanger, and raw water is only used to cool the coolant—not the engine directly, which helps prevent corrosion and extends engine life.
