As you consider the performance reports, remember some differences:

• The Caterpillar engines have a 20% better displacement than the Volvos. Engine cylinder displacement is necessary for engines to have the power to punch through ugly seas; nothing will take the place of raw power out in the open ocean, it's just not something you can finesse.

• The power curve of the Caterpillars is robust compared to the anemic performance of the the IPS that claim power from the twin props and claimed horsepower. The Volvos are called IPS 950 even though the engines are actually 725 HP; 500 HP less than the Caterpillar powered Tiara C53 at similar brochure stated Average Dry Weight of 42,770 lbs.

• The hull shape is different as of necessity for operation the IPS style drive it must have a rounded bottom and no keel; both of which are diametrically opposed to good sea keeping.

• The Caterpillar powered hull has a keel which means it will track better and ride better, particularly in a seaway.
